DOWEX Resins for Separation of Carbon from Liquid or Vapor
| |
|
| |
Carbon is the most diverse element and exists in a wide variety of chemical compounds. It is not possible to discuss all the different compounds of carbon and how they can all be separated, so general guidelines are given for further investigation.

Applications
Uncharged Carbon Compounds: Carbon forms many compounds that are uncharged. Since uncharged compounds lack an "ionic handle", we must rely on weak Van der Waal forces of adsorption. DOWEX™ OPTIPORE™ polymeric adsorbents can be used to capture a wide variety of uncharged molecules from liquid and vapor streams. For more information on solvent recovery from air streams or capture of hazardous air pollutants, please go to VOC Control with Polymeric Adsorbents. For information on removing a variety of organic compounds from water, please go to Organics Removal from Process Water.
Carbonic and Organic Acids and their salts of the general form of R-COO- are anions so they can be captured with anion exchange resins. Cyanide is another anionic carbon compound that can act like a weak acid. When they are present as acids, they can be captured with the acid absorber DOWEX M-43 weak base anion exchange resin from both air and liquid streams. When the stream is not acidic, a strong base resin like DOWEX 21K XLT resin will be required. For streams that have a high organic content and are prone to surface fouling, DOWEX MARATHON™ MSA resin is recommended.
Amino Acids, Peptides, and Proteins are a special focus for Dow so a section is devoted to this topic in the Biotech / Pharma and Fine Chemical Applications.
Carbohydrates, Sugars, and Starches are a special focus for Dow so a section is devoted to this topic in Sweetener Applications.
Organic Chemicals are interconverted with the assistance of catalysts. Again, this topic is of keen interest to Dow so a section of this web site is devoted to this topic in Catalysis of Organic Reactions.
